What are You Doing with Your Vapor?

From the Heart of Jana McDonald (Director of Transformed Women)-

I was looking out my living room window at the beautiful ten-inch blanket of snow that recently fell. As the sun was sparkling off every snowflake on the ground like a sea of glitter, I noticed vapors of heat coming from the furnace exhaust on my neighbor’s home. I watched these vapors and noticed they disappeared just as fast as they appeared into the -2° air. I was quickly reminded of how our lives here on earth are just the same, here and gone before we know it.
“Yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes" (James 4:14).

The devil bombards us with temporary circumstances and constantly tries to distract us with our emotions, an offense, or even something seemingly good yet not God’s best for us. The enemy of our soul wants us to ignore reality, avoid eternity, and dismiss everything that God said is true and significant. The things of this world will pass away but the unseen, the eternal, will last forever. Wouldn’t it be great if that is where we could keep our focus?

This is an area for me that I have to constantly work on. Being mindful of what I allow into my life helps a great deal. I must be intentional about my thought life, and I often say I have to think about what I’m thinking about. Paul says, “We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ" (2 Corinthians 10:5).

Eternal mindedness keeps us from engaging in silly arguments or offense. There is no time to fight or hold onto bitterness when we are aware that we have a much bigger purpose and responsibility. We cannot afford to waste our lives on merely pursuing our own happiness, the stakes are far too high. How different would our lives look, even for a day, if we avoided the temporary and focused on the eternal?
