What are You Looking Forward to?
From the heart of Dr. Kristi Lemley
Has there been a time when you were looking forward to something and it triggered excitement and joy? Sure, we have all been there. Actually, I am there now. Even as I type this blog, I am anticipating my 30 day sabbatical which begins in just a few days. I can hear the beach calling my name right now.
Studies show that when people have something to look forward to, they are more likely to be happy, less stressed, and more productive. Why? It is because their focus is not on what is happening right now, but what is going to happen. They look beyond current circumstances and set their focus on the potential of what is coming. This is a powerful motivator!
As believers, what does this mean for us? Even while I am looking forward to rest and relaxation, it pales in comparison to the excitement the thought of heaven elicits. When we recognize the fact that this earth is not our home, trials become less permeant. We are more likely to keep up the good fight because of the reward that is on its way.
James 1:12, "Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him." Friends, greater joy and peace that we can dare to imagine will soon be present. You will receive the crown of life one day if you remain attached to Jesus. Everything you are going through and the pain you feel will fade away as you are embraced by the Savior. Now that is something to be excited about.
When you begin to feel depressed or afraid, ask yourself, "What am I looking forward to?"
