Managing Time Part 2

How can I manage my time better?

Kristi's Answer:

I decided to write a follow up blog about time management because it is such a huge issue for most of us. On this second blog, I want to address how to move things from us thinking about doing something, to following a schedule.

First, if you are anything like me, which I bet you are, I can forget things. In order to compensate for doing this, I rehash certain thoughts over and over so I do not forget them. This was making my head hurt so I finally began writing everything down. Do you know the minute you write down what you were thinking about your brain releases it? Yep. Try it. In order to not forget a task, make a to-do list.

At the beginning of every week, I write down all the tasks that I HAVE to do for that week. Then, I write down activities I would LIKE to accomplish if time permits. Next, I jot down jobs that it would be GREAT if I was able to fit into the schedule. Then, I begin to write down what day I will achieve each "have to". I time block in these necessary duties. Then, I put a day with a question mark beside the "like to" items. I do not include the "great" projects in my schedule as I do not want to overwhelm myself. Then, at the beginning of the next week, I look over my list and repeat as needed.

One of the most important pieces of wisdom, is to then follow my schedule. Now, I want to add that small variations are fine. However, if a major overhaul is needed, then we are either overcommitted or a procrastinator. (If a crisis develops, then throw this all out the window.) If your schedule is too full, then pray and ask the Lord what to remove. Spend time in His stillness for appropriate direction. If you are a procrastinator, then figure out a way to motivate yourself to follow through. Maybe you allow yourself a dessert if you accomplish your list for the day. Or at the end of the week treat yourself to a special dinner or a movie if you achieved the "have to" items.
